The Standard format is the most balanced format and is the most commonly played, so I bet that’s gonna be the majority of what you see at your league. To maintain relative game balance (and make people buy more cards) they rotate a bunch of cards out of the Standard format every fall. Since I mentioned Standard format, I’ll explain what that is. Despite that, it might still be a good idea to use it to familiarize yourself with the game mechanics hands on. The TCGO is based on the real card game and has the exact same rules, but the tutorial and games against the AI use a lot of outdated cards that aren’t legal in the Standard format. I’m sure this is like the most basic of basic beginner questions lol, and if it’s against the rules or there’s a better place to ask these questions I’d be happy to move my post, but any wisdom or advice on the basics would be so so appreciated. Do I buy something like the beginner academy set/lets go pikachu lets go evee 2 player set, or is that considered too juvenile? Do I get something like the vivid voltage charizard theme deck? Do I buy a few 50 card random packs off Amazon and try my luck? I’d like to buy something that is a reasonable starter deck that I could take to a tcg league. does the tcg app run off the same ruleset as the in-person card game? I’d like to get my feet wet and play a few rounds that way before showing up to my local game store as a total noob, but if it’s a different ruleset I’d rather skip it, so I don’t learn the wrong way.Īlso, how the heck do you build a playable deck? A basic search for “Pokémon tcg beginner kit” gives soooo many options and I honestly don’t know where to start. I’ve watched a couple YouTube videos and I think I understand the very basics of the game.

Im having a ton of fun with the switch games, and I want to learn how to play tcg, especially since my local game store has a weekly tcg league. I’m brand new to tcg, I never learned how to play as a kid, and only recently started playing the Pokémon video games as an adult.
